Having served on the client side with large corporations and cutting edge start-ups, founder Penelope Longbottom gained invaluable knowledge, experience and a keen sense of what makes for an effective branding and communications campaign. She launched Longbottom Communications with a vision of applying this broad experience to a range of clients, enhancing their image with measurable impact.

A client would be hard-pressed to find a PR firm with the deep level of specialization in the industries that Longbottom covers. Several of our team members hail from the corporate side of the satellite communications business, where we collectively amassed decades of knowledge, experience and all-important industry influencer relationships.

The deep bench strength of our Sage colleagues enriches our capabilities with website development, digital marketing, strategic PR and social media, advertising creative and media buying and sales and marketing collateral. Collectively we provide deep expertise on the issues – political, regulatory and competitive – that keep our clients awake at night.

Building long-term relationships with our clients is as important as building our business. We do this through personalized attention of each team member and by delivering memorable, effective, results-oriented work that supports our client's sales and marketing objectives – and their bottom line.

Since 2013, Longbottom Communications has operated as a wholly owned division of Sage Communications, continuing to specialize in the global space, satellite and energy sectors. Most of the original Longbottom team members continue to operate alongside their Sage colleagues at the McLean, VA headquarters of the larger agency.

Penelope Longbottom

President

Longbottom Communications Division

Over the course of the last three decades founder and President Penelope Longbottom has provided PR counsel and delivered a range of creative branding and marketing communications solutions to companies on the leading edge of the global satellite communications industry. She founded Longbottom Communications in 2000 with a specialty focus on satellite communications, space and defense markets.

Along with a team of seasoned satellite industry communications professionals, Longbottom grew the agency steadily year over year until it was acquired by and merged with Sage Communications in November 2013. Throughout its 15-year history, Longbottom has represented a number of blue chip global communications firms such as Intelsat, Arianespace, XTAR, Inmarsat, ASC Signal, MTN Government, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin Commercial Space, along with many notable industry conferences and professional organizations.

Before launching her eponymous firm, Longbottom served in series of executive corporate communications staff positions at several leading satellite communications and defense firms. She headed the branding and communications functions of, respectively, XM Satellite Radio (now SiriusXM); Lockheed Martin Intersputnik, a unit of Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, and satellite pioneering firm Hughes Communications, Inc., where her department facilitated the branding and early marketing of the first digital direct to home television service, DirecTV and Japan’s first commercial satellite communications enterprise, JCSAT.

Longbottom was instrumental in forming the Satellite Industry Association (SIA) in 1994 and served as its first elected chairman.

Born and educated in the United Kingdom, Longbottom became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1977. In additional to her UK undergraduate studies, she received certificates of advanced business and international marketing management from UCLA's John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management in 1989.

 

Patrick Boyle

Managing Partner

Longbottom Communications Division

Patrick Boyle joined Longbottom Communications in 2006. He contributes to business development and has direct accountability for several major accounts. During his tenure he has helped define message platform strategy and implementation of proactive PR campaigns that have generated significant media coverage for a range of clients, including Intelsat General, Inmarsat Government, Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems, MTN Government and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Boyle has over 35 years experience as a daily newspaper journalist, public relations executive and marketing strategy professional, with a wide range of skills and experiences across a number of industries. He applies this journalistic background to creating compelling print, web and social media content for Longbottom clients.

Starting with a series of regional papers, Boyle cemented his journalism career as a member of the business staff of the Los Angeles Times, in which capacity he opened the Times’ first Detroit bureau. He subsequently joined a Los Angeles-based public relations firm representing clients across the automotive and technology sectors. He later held senior management positions at a New England boarding school and a Virginia real estate firm before joining Longbottom Communications.

Boyle received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, and holds a masters degree in journalism from Northwestern University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

 

Jennifer Hoil

Account Manger

Sage Communications

Jennifer Hoil joined Longbottom Communications in 2006, transition to Sage Communications at the time of its 2013 merger. As account manager she supports several key clients, managing a full range of PR and marketing communications deliverables. Hoil is also the lead executive on social media campaigns for clients wanting to integrate this functionality into their overall communications strategy.

Prior to joining Longbottom Communications, Hoil held marketing positions at two software companies in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. She was the marketing and website coordinator responsible for managing creative production of printed collateral and developing the company websites. She furthered her website design and development skills by taking a position in her next company's Interactive Marketing department. She co-managed the company's corporate and internal websites and, working closely with the brand and PR managers, conveyed all corporate marketing communications initiatives to the site.

Hoil began her career in communications in 1999. Her experience includes project management, marketing communications, branding and messaging, social media management, media relations and coordination, tradeshow and conference promotions, website design and editing, website functionality management and event coordination.

Hoil serves on the board of directors of the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) Mid-Atlantic Chapter, currently as membership chair. In 2012, she was vice president of communications for Women in Aerospace (WIA). She is also an active participant in the Washington Space Business Roundtable (WSBR), and a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

Hoil graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. She is a fluent Spanish speaker.

 

Lisa Koppel

Senior Associate

A seasoned communications professional specializing in media relations and corporate branding, Lisa Koppel joined the Longbottom Communications team in 2009. Her specialty is creating and building relationships with key industry and business media, providing insight and context on the continually evolving issues that shape the commercial and defense communications sectors, and generating earned media coverage for clients.

Prior to joining Longbottom Communications, Koppel helped expand the public image of a range of U.S. and international satellite, aerospace and information technology companies. She served as Director of Marketing for the International Space Business Council, an association that worked to create a strong, unified image for the commercial space industry. In that position she championed the space industry and its influence on the global economy by working with trade and business publications to ensure they understood how space technology and services support multiple industries.

Previously, Koppel was responsible for various public relations activities for Loral Corporation, starting with planning and managing communications campaigns for Loral's forty-three commercial and government business units worldwide. She subsequently helped publicize the new brand image for the commercial services and manufacturing activities of Loral Space & Communications. Koppel then developed strategies to promote and expand Loral CyberStar's brand in the satellite broadband and Internet Protocol service arena in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Koppel received a Bachelor's degree in International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins University and a Masters in International Economic Affairs from American University.
